The Akshaya Patra Foundation as started the mid-day meal program feeding 2,500 students in 5 Government schools at Bangalore in the year 2000. Now the Foundation, spread in Karnataka, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh, provides fresh & nutritious vegetarian mid-day meals to 9 lakh 60 thousand children.
The Akshaya Patra Foundation, in joint venture with various State Governments and Central Government is the biggest, secular, non-profitable and non-Governmental organisation in the world. With the determined motto of "No child in India should be deprived of education due to lack of food", provides nutritious food to school children and makes them into educated individuals.
In the holy town of Puri, the Foundation has commenced its distribution of the mid-day meals in March 2000 for 1500 children in Govt. schools. Currently, the Foundation provides mid-day meals for 40,000 students in 263 Govt. schools, daily. The Akshaya Patra Foundation in its own scientifically constructed modern technology and know-how kitchen, equipped with experienced cooks prepares and provides fresh nutritious cooked food. Rice, dalma, matar-chana, Alu-chana, Curds and kheer are distributed in the schools. Apart from this, every Saturday the children are provided vegetable palav, as a part of the mid-day meal.
